After a top weekend visiting our son in the forest in Surrey, having a go in their caving system - a bit scary really !!! we head over to Hayling and park just over the road bridge. This was the start of the 'Billy Line' cycle/walk path a disused railway track which takes you along side Langstone harbour to the beach :) We packed a picnic and set off at midday, this is the nice side of the island with no caravan sites or big marina's spoiling the nature, round a couple of bends we came across a very noisy colony of nesting black headed gulls ! After about 4 miles we reach the coast road and turn right to the ferry with the pub on the water front, a spot I remember from when I sailed around the island years ago with 500 other windsurfers and being narrow and fast flowing and the rolling surf just out to sea !!! We head across the beach path and only have to push our bikes through the shingle in a couple of places, it reminds us of Landguard back home with banks of sea cabbage. We stop in a very quiet spot by the sea for our picnic and have some fun feeding the gulls our crusts :) We continue past where the windsurfers and kiters go, noticing it costs £6 a day to park and £15 to park overnight ! We pass the amusment park with it's broken down old roller coaster. We make to the end of the sea front and try a few roads looking for a way through but just end up in caravan sites and marina's so head back to the busy main road. I spot a sign to Northney marina which takes us 2 miles through lovely countryside to the the marina - the start of the round island race. It was then back to the van and load the bikes and head for the next carpark along by the Esso garage where we park up for two nights - free too and have a well deserved cuppa - a top top day :)
